BUSINESS AREA: EXPLORATION SYSTEMS

This target business area focuses on the technologies required for future lunar and planetary exploration missions. Such systems could include highly advanced sensors and platforms working together to collect data and deliver an integrated information product. Technology should support specific needs of Constellation, the Lunar Precursor and Robotic Program (LPRP), and/or Human Exploration.

Of particular interest are technologies supporting:

  • Autonomous Rendezvous and Docking
  • Modular, Reconfigurable, Adaptable Flight and Surface Systems
  • Miniaturized Instrumentation for In-Situ Resource Utilization, and Sensing, and
  • Imaging for Human Systems Research
  • Applied Science for Exploration

Because the Exploration Initiative spans decades and future technology developments and needs cannot be fully anticipated, Goddard also is interested in technology forecasting, evolvability of systems, and system of systems interoperability.
