This target business area includes systems and technologies needed for responsive communications and navigation. The required capabilities include:
- Dramatic advances in deep space and near-Earth communications data rates of up to 100 Mb/s (bidirectional) to/from MARS; up to 10Gb/s in near-Earth space (up to 2 Million Km)
- Transparent internetworking of space systems
- Dramatic improvements in ground system efficiency
- Autonomous (ground and/or onboard) navigation approaches including rendezvous and docking techniques; innovative orbit designs. and orbit control concepts to enable cost-effective communications relays in the Earth-lunar system; and
- Space- and ground-based phased-array technologies that could service the next generation of near-Earth (including airborne, suborbital, orbital, lunar, L1 and L2) missions.
These investments are primarily intended to support NASA’s Exploration, Space Operations and Science space missions in near-Earth and deep space environment
